TYPE Ø NEGATIVE
Type O Negative was formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 1989 by frontman Peter Steele, who was previously a member of the hardcore punk band Carnivore. The band's original lineup also included keyboardist Josh Silver and guitarist Kenny Hickey. Their unique sound was a blend of gothic, doom, and heavy metal, with dark, often humorous lyrics. They gained popularity in the 90s with albums like "Bloody Kisses" and "October Rust," which featured hits like "Black No. 1" and "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend." Tragically, Peter Steele passed away in 2010, and the band disbanded shortly afterward. Despite their relatively short career, Type O Negative were one of the greatest gothic metal bands of all time (imo)
Peter Steele, the singer of Type O Negative, was raised in a Catholic family, which deeply impacted his beliefs and music. Despite being an athiest in his early life, Steele loved the imagery, symbolism, and rituals of Catholicism. His lyrics often explored themes of sin, guilt, and redemption, drawing from his religious upbringing. Steele's fascination with the macabre and the occult was partially rooted in the Gothic aesthetic of Catholicism, which he incorporated into his music and persona. Later in life he converted to a Roman Catholic.
